I major theme I notice in The Death of a Sales Man was the Anerican dream. Willy Loman believes that he can obtain the American Dream by just being a businessman. That he can achieve it with little work because of his good looks and that he is well liked. He doesn't understand that he needed to work hard to achieve the American dream. He was blinded by his beliefs on the American Dream making it harder for him to actually achieve it. Biff says "He's liked, but not well liked" speaking to his friend Bernard. They had both been talking about Willy and that quote goes against what Willy says is a great way to achieve the American Dream. That since he is well liked it will be easier to achieve the American Dream. Biff says that he is liked by only a few people when he says that. That many people don't like him and that's one thing that makes it harder for Willy to achieve the American Dream. Do you think Willy will be able to achieve his vision of the American Dream because of his ability to be well liked or is biff right?

The American dream is not something that can be easily obtained. It is something that requires lots of years of hard work. It is not given because you are well liked, it is given because you've earned it.
ReplyDeleteI think that biff is right because the American dream must be worked for. It is like anything else in life; if you want it you have to go get it. Nothing is handed to you in life. Biff knows how people feel about his dad, so i agree with biff.
ReplyDeleteIn order to be successful, of course one has to work hard to achieve it. Willy told Biff when he was young that he, since he was well-liked, he would get far in life, completely disregarding education. Said son can't even hold a steady job now and he's 34 years old. It's clear that Willy is wrong here.
ReplyDeleteHey Spaz, I dont believe that Willy will be able to obtain his dream just because of the fact that he thinks it can simply be handed to him. Also the fact that willy regrets most of his life and wishes that he could go back and pick a different path holds him back from success. Also willy is way to focused on trying to obtain financial wealth and focuses on the non-important things in life.
ReplyDeleteSpaz,Personally I think that Wily will not be able to obtain his idea of the American dream because like you said he thinks his looks and his popularity is enough to obtain it. I think the American dream is only obtainable by putting your nose to the grindstone and working for what you want.Ones popularity means nothing when it comes time to work and prove your metal, thats how willy will get the American dream by working for it.

ReplyDeleteThe American dream would say that one must work hard in order to achieve their goals. Although Willy thinks that his job of a business man provides him the American dream by being well liked by others, it would then take much more from him to be truly happy and how the right mindset on the American dream.
